Programming as fuel for the ecosystem

“Breda has a lot to offer: a convenient location with fast connections to Brussels, Amsterdam and Paris, plenty of creative talent, and a rich history. We should cherish what is already here and make better use of it – the gems deserve more time in the spotlight. Take the music, art and technology festival TURF: a wonderful example of a showcase event where public-private partnerships, creators and businesses come together. Or Playgrounds and Dutch Game Week: events that put Breda on the map nationally and internationally. Showcases like these demonstrate what Breda can do, and how collaboration releases energy.”

The challenge now is to connect all those initiatives. It is about balance: making room for SMEs in the creative sector, opportunities for educational institutions and the leisure sector, but also for underground scenes that provide uniqueness and dynamism. This calls for coordination – a neutral body that, together with the council and Breda Marketing, provides direction, communication and delivery. Not endless consensus-building to keep everyone happy, but clear choices and decisive action.

Branding and programming are, in my view, the fuel for this ecosystem. Telling the story consistently and provocatively increases engagement. Signature events are essential to this: they are moments when Breda projects its ambitions, attracts talent and businesses, and shows that this is the place to stay. That creates a magnetic effect. A tremendous amount of good work has already been done; now it is a matter of putting the pieces of the puzzle together and continuing to build on this sustainable collaboration step by step.”
